“Wanna Play Legos?”

Josh TalbottComment

Build a Something of 10 or less LEGO blocks.

Send it to me. I will make paintings of my favorites. If I choose yours I will send you a tshirt with the finished painting on it.

This is a small project with a couple of works on the way. If you’d like to participate send me a message.

Here are some of my reflections on the coming ‘abstract’ LEGO paintings.

Through the lens of relationship building.

What pieces are there and how do they fit together? Where are their limitations?

How do we navigate this placing of things together to bring about the greatest attributes of all the pieces and the whole?

Abstractions can accommodate complexity and....

abstraction can be used to manipulate.

So refine our abstractions?

Over 15 years ago a single LEGO block made it’s way into a painting. It has resulted in an ebb and flow of playful works of many kinds of toys. They are thinking tools for small(or not so small) people and help us figure ourselves into the story of the world around us. We practice our stories with them as our avatars. They become our tools of learning and development. There have been times when building playful images was just inaccessible to me due to the demands of the conditions I found myself in.In our present moment there is such a challenge again. Most all of my galleries have closed, art sales are understandably stagnant Or nonexistent and the strain of the moment reaches far past immediate finances. There is a great pressure present and I struggle to find the value in art making. I have so many interests that this is not as tragic as it may sound to some. Art has been the way I learned to learn and has since been subsumed by the love of learning.I love my life and I am so grateful for my lens at the world. However the message I’m receiving at the moment is that this is a time for downsizing. I’ll be making small paintings of abstract LEGO creations in the course of completing my favorite remaining works in progress but there will be far fewer paintings per year than usual. The others will be rolled up and wait for a different time and make some room in my tiny home for other possibilities.Where ever you are and whatever you are doing remember to be kind and patient. These times will pass. Wishing you well.Josh
